The Sierra Vista Cougar Cubs would like to take you on a scenic tour of our wonderful school…

As you drive down Corona Avenue, in the heart of Norco, you may have to slow down and wait for the rooster, chicken and the new babies to cross the road.  When you pull into our driveway and step out of your car you will be greeted by our family of goats who reside on the hill at the edge of our campus.  The friendly smiles of our 530 students, their parents and our 48 staff will impart a warm feeling as you make your way onto campus.

If you arrive in the morning, you will see our students out on the playground running laps for the 100 Mile Club, a program which encourages students to stay active both physically and mentally.  The children receive a stick for each lap they run, with the goal of receiving a T-shirt at 25 miles and ultimately, a gold medal for running 100 miles over the course of the school year.

As you tour classrooms, you will be welcomed by a Greeter who will tell you a little about what the class is learning and even give you a short tour of the room if you want.  In each room you will find a focus on engaging students through the concepts of “Learning Together” and “Personal Response.”  Students are provided opportunities to work cooperatively during lessons and connect the new learning to what they already know.  Products of student work are proudly displayed on the walls and they are eager to show you their work and tell you what they learned while doing the activity.

As morning turns into afternoon you will find some of our A.M. kinders still at school, busy practicing speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.  They are being taught by our English Language Specialist who is certified to focus specifically on the needs of these students.  Working in a print rich environment, they are immersed in English through stories, guided reading and writing activities which give them time to practice their sight words and grammar.

After dismissal, about 100 students make their way to the playground to sign-in for the after school program.  They have a stretch break, snack and then spend time in small groups working on homework with their after school tutor.  On Mondays and Wednesdays, language arts practice is built into the program and Tuesdays and Thursdays are math days.  On Fridays you will see these students engaged in art projects, cooking and other fun, hands-on activities which serve as enrichment for them.

We know that all children love their school and at Sierra Vista, we do too.  We love the rural setting and the friendly community that surrounds our campus.  Our goats and horses make our school a unique and wonderful place to learn and grow.  We invite you to come, visit and take in all of the qualities that make Sierra Vista unique.
