In most cultures, cemeteries and graveyards are viewed as places of sorrow and sadness. Often, places like these are feared and avoided. In Mexico, however, death is celebrated with fruit sacrifices, flower décor, gifts, and candles on the Day of the Dead. The holiday is celebrated every year from November 1–2. During these days, it is tradition for family and friends to gather at the homes of those who have most recently lost a loved one. Years thereafter, a decorated altar will be placed at a nearby cemetery or graveyard in their honor. On each altar you may find a picture of the deceased loved one, their favorite foods, and any other item that was near and dear to them.
