Welcome to Fifth Grade, the home of Ms. Gereau’s Lightning Learners!  I am looking forward to a productive year full of excitement and new challenges for your child.  We will be very busy reading, writing, completing projects, and using technology as we cover the Fifth Grade California Content Standards.  By working together, we will see your child grow into an independent, life-long learner. Classroom policies for the year are explained below.  If you have any questions, please contact me.  My preferred method of contact is through e-mail.

    Classroom Expectations

The following expectations have been discussed and agreed upon by our class:

    1.      Listen carefully and follow directions.

    2.     Work quietly and do not disturb others.

    3.     Respect yourself, others, and our school.  Be kind with your words and actions.

    4.     Demonstrate grade level virtue of self-discipline.

    Classroom Economy

Our classroom management system this year will be implemented on an economy system.  Students will be assessed fines and bonuses based on their actions and behavior in the classroom and on the playground.  At the end of each week the students will be given a paycheck payable in “Bonus Bucks” for the amount earned during the week.  At the end of each trimester, we will have an auction where students may purchase items with their “Bonus Bucks”.

    Fines                         Bonuses

    Restroom - $10                                      Bathroom Pass Unused-$20

    Name Logged-$10 & up                            Perfect Behavior-$5 Daily

    Missing Homework-$10 & up                     Homework Returned-$20 weekly

    Talking Violation-$20                               Job completion-$20 weekly

    Missing Name/#-$10                               Allowance-$10 weekly

Fines and bonuses can be changed/adjusted if needed during the school year.

    Behavior Management

In conjunction with our classroom economy, our class will be using a behavior logbook to track discipline.  Students will log their name when a classroom expectation has not been followed. All behavior grades for a grading period will be based on the daily log and will be recorded on a weekly basis. The following chart outlines consequences and related grade.

    Behavior Slip

Students who move to the second log of the day will be required to fill out a behavior slip.  Each slip will be sent home and must be signed by a parent and returned the next day.  If the student does not return the note, he/she will automatically lose recess for the day.

    Severe Clause

This consequence goes into effect when a student demonstrates severe behavior toward a fellow student or adult as determined by a teacher.  Students will be sent to the office where administration will determine consequences.  Behavior grade will be “N” for the day.

    Behavior Rewards

Each day a student does not log their name he/she shall receive $5 in “Bonus Bucks”.

Each day a student does not log his/her name he/she will record the name on our “Grid Luck” chart.  One name will be drawn from the chart each day and that person will receive a homework pass good for one assignment.

    Curriculum

Our fifth grade curriculum is based on California Common Core State Standards/Timelines for Learning.  District Assessments will be given each trimester to assess progress in mastering the standards.  STAR testing will occur in April.  The following websites can give you further information on State Standards and expectations.

    Homework Policy

Students in 5th grade are expected to complete homework on a daily basis.  Homework will include, but will not be limited to, daily reading and response journal, oral book report, spelling, math, science, and social studies.  Students will record homework on a “Homework Contract” that will be in their binder daily.  Please check the contract each day and initial.   Homework grades for the grading period will be based on number of assignments turned in on time on a weekly basis. The following chart outlines grading for homework.
