    Dr. Bechler    Ms. Derus

The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) announced its 2012 state award recipients, and two CNUSD leaders were honored: Dr. Kent Bechler was named state Superintendent of the Year and Eastvale’s Assistant Principal Michele Derus was awarded state Elementary Co-Administrator of the Year.

Michele Derus has served as Assistant Principal at Eastvale for four years and previously worked as AP at Norco Elementary. Before becoming an administrator, Derus was a K-12 educator for over 25 years.

“Michele is loyal, hardworking, dedicated and well-respected by her peers,” said Eastvale Elementary Principal Steve Rachunok. “She’s at the top of her game, and she is very deserving of this award.”

Although Rachunok is retiring this year, he knows Derus will maintain Eastvale’s high standards and continue to provide the best services to the students and community. During their tenure together at Eastvale, Rachunok especially appreciated Michele’s sense of humor, organization skills, and ability to relate to her peers, teachers, students and parents.

“She is an exceptionally capable individual, and she has the right mindset to challenge people to perform their best,” said Rachunok. “The future of Eastvale is very bright.”

“Knowing that what I do on a daily basis can affect a child’s future and make a difference makes me very proud,” said Derus. “I have to say that I know how hard all assistant principals work, and being recognized is truly a blessing.”

Dr. Bechler has served CNUSD as superintendent for five years, and has paved the way for many successes, including increasing academic scores and advancing technology for students. Bechler has worked in education for the past 32 years and will be retiring this August.

“Dr. Bechler is an exceptional leader and is very deserving of this honor,” said CNUSD Assistant Superintendent of Executive Services Tom Pike.

These awards will be presented at the ACSA Leadership Summit in San Diego, November 8-10, 2012.
