Fun Sight Word Practice
After many years of experimenting with sight word games, we have come up with a practice sequence that takes 7-10 minutes. If you can practice using these steps each night then you should see success within a week or so for each list.
1. I SAY YOU SAY-Show each card and read the word. Have your child repeat it back as they look at it.
2. CAN YOU FIND? (FACE UP) Place all the cards face up. Ask your child to find each word one at a time. If they cannot recognize it, then you can pick it up and have them look at it and say it.
3. WHAT IS IT? (FACE DOWN) Place al the cards face down. Have your child pick up each card one at a time, and read the word. If they cannot recognize it then you can say it for them and have them repeat it while looking at the word.
4. I SAY YOU SAY-Show each card and read the word. Have your child repeat it back as they look at it.
5.SCAVENGER HUNT-Take the word cards and hide them around the room. Have your child put their head down and cover their eyes while you hide the words. Have them run around the room looking for the word cards. When they bring them to you, have them tell you what the word is.
BONUS GAME: When your child has mastered the word list (This should take about a week or so of the practice sequence above-DAILY), then it's time for some fun! Get out a cookie sheet and some Cool Whip whipped cream. Have them write eachword in the whipped cream. When they say the word they wrote then they can lick their finger.
