Step Up to Writing is the writing program we use that focuses on making the writing process simple and easy to remember.  Students will become familiar with the main steps in writing by relating them to the colors green, yellow and red.  At each grade level, students master skills of increasing length and complexity.

                                     Title

Topic Sentence: The main topic of the composition is stated.  (You tell the reader what you are writing about!)

Reason/Detail/Fact : Give the reader a main reason, detail or fact that relates to and supports the topic sentence. Use transition to start these sentences. (A list is available on the bottom of the page).

Explain/Example: Give an example for the statement made in the reason/detail/fact sentence.
(*Note: Reds begin in second grade and will only be expected from first grade students who need to be challenged.)

Concluding Sentence: The topic is restated to remind the reader what the composition was about. Use a transition to begin this sentences. (A list is available on the bottom of the page).

    Example with no reds:

                                                                  My Dog Molly

My dog is the smartest brown dog in the whole world.

First, when Molly was a small puppy, my family and I taught

    her all
kinds of cool tricks.  Next, we like to go outside and

play fetch on the flat green grass, which is her favor
    ite

    game.
Last, in the morning, she hops on my cozy bed to lick

    my warm
face.  Obviously, Molly is one of the best dogs

    because she is so
    smart!

     Example with reds:

                                                                   My Dog Molly

My dog is the smartest brown dog in the whole world.

First, when Molly was a small puppy, my family and I taught

    her all
kinds of cool tricks.  Molly is able to sit down and shake

    hands
with her soft hands when she is told.  Next, we like to

    go outside
and play fetch on the flat green grass, which is her

    favor
ite game.  After we play fetch, Molly drinks a lot of water

from her round water dish.  Last, in the morning, she hops

on my cozy bed to lick my warm
face.  She hops on my bed

to wake me up so that I remember to feed her a good

    breakfast
.  Obviously, Molly is one of the best dogs because

    she is so
    smart!
