First GradeCommon Core State Standard:
1.W.1: Students write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
We use the district adopted writing program “Step Up to Writing” for opinion writing.
Our goal: First graders should write a 3 sentence paragraph, which introduces the topic/opinion, states an opinion and gives at least one reason for the opinion, and provides a sense of closure by the end of the year.
Trimester 1: This type of paragraph should currently include a green topic sentence that introduces the topic and states an opinion, one yellow star idea that gives a reason, and a green conclusion sentence with a conclusion word that restates the opinion. (One yellow star idea does not need to start with a transition word.)
Trimester2: We will work on writing opinions about books and stating multiple reasons for the opinion where relevant.
Trimester3:We will continue to write more complex sentences giving an opinion and multiple reasons for the opinion in a Step Up to Writing format. (Topic sentence that states an opinion, 1-3 star ideas, with transition words, that give reasons for the opinion, a conclusion sentence that restates or rewords the opinion.)
TopicSentences (green): Must be a sentence not a title and introduce thetopic and/or the opinion. The topic word(s) or the book title should be included in this first sentence.
Star Ideas(yellow): Give a reason(s) for the opinion. When multiple reasons are given, star ideas should begin with transition words.
Conclusions(green): End the writing. They should begin with a conclusion word and restate or reword the opinion on the topic or book. They do not introduce more details.
