    CLASS LETTER

    Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 8th Grade! This is the start of a new and exciting year for us. As a CFIS teacher, I will be assisting with you in preparing your student for high school! Information regarding high school registration and promotion details will be delivered to the students during the third trimester.

    Curriculum-Common Core
Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and Math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the CCSS to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

    Honors
Students will have the opportunity to have some differentiated assignments that require a different degree of analytical thinking

    Required Materials
    1. Literature text book
    2. Three-ring binder with pencil pouch for their supplies including lined paper.
    3. Composition Notebook (100 pages)
    4. #2 pencils
    5. Student Agenda - Homework is to be recorded for each academic subject…homework is weekly!
    6. A good attitude.

Failure to come to class prepared will result in a student detention issued by the teacher.

    Grading
Grades for Language Arts will be based on the average of the following assignments:
    40% Homework
    40% Tests/Quizzes
    20% Projects (home and class)

You can check your student’s grades on the parent portal through the district. Grades will be updated approximately every 2 weeks.

    Homework Policy
All homework will be checked daily (as assigned) and returned on the assigned due dates. The penalty for accepted late work is an automatic 50% reduction of the students’ earned grade. The penalty for late projects is a 10% deduction for every day the project is turned in late. Any project turned in after 5 days of the due date will receive an automatic 50% deduction on the received grade. This does not include if a student has been absent. In the case of an absence, your student will have one day for every day of absence to turn in their work. The last day to turn in any missing or make.up work will be one week prior to tracking off. It is the student’s responsibility to inquire about what assignment he or she has missed. If you know in advance that your child is going to be absent and would like to collect his or her homework ahead of time, please give me at least two days’ notice.

    Discipline Policy
My management system is based on positive reinforcement. I believe in rewarding good behaviors and keeping the lines of communication open from school to home. Student who exhibit positive behavior of any type (being respectful, turns in homework daily, listens in class, etc.) will receive a Falcon Feather Ticket, Early-to-Lunch pass, or a Cruising Pass.

In the event that your student has violated any of the team/school rules, a detention or a referral will be issued to your student. You have chosen to send your child to CFIS knowing the rules, i.e., school, dress, etc. When you receive the AGENDA, please read and become familiar with the rules so negative experiences are eliminated.
