As I reflect on my first several years here as principal, I am amazed at how much we have accomplished in such a short time. I am reminded of the popular African proverb that says "It takes a village to raise a child". We truly have formed that village here, and I am confident we will continue to provide opportunities for our students to achieve to their greatest potential. Collaboratively, the staff, students, and parents have worked together to raise student achievement and promote a successful safe and orderly environment. In three years we have redesignated approximately 300 of our English Language Learners. Our parent involvement has increased with the many activities we provide throughout the year and our daily student attendance is at an all time high. Our staff is committed to nurturing the personal and academic growth in each and every one of our students. Many programs are in place that enhances the education of our children. We are a “Writing for Student Achievement School,” implementing Step Up to Writing in every classroom. We also have a newcomer program as well as other intervention programs such as Voyager Reading Passport, SRA Math, Accelerated Reader, intersession, and the PAWS afterschool program. Parents and community members have many opportunities to be involved by participating in the Latino Family Literacy Project, RosettaStone Classes, Family Fact and Fun nights, as well as other PTA sponsored events. Parents of English language learners, I encourage you to attend our monthly ELAC (English Learner Advisory Council) meetings. From the office staff who greet visitors with a friendly smile, to the amazing custodians who keep our campus clean, to the outstanding teachers and instructional assistants who work directly with our children, it is a privilege to work with staff who are dedicated to student achievement. Our assistant principal, Mrs. Veronica Rodriguez, and I are looking forward to a year full of opportunities that will continue to build relationships and pride here at Parkridge.
