Dear Parents and Guardians:
It’s hard to believe that I’m starting my third year at Garretson and 14th year overall as a school administrator. I have seen many changes over the years in education; new textbooks, curriculum, Standards, etc. However, the most important factors for a school are the connections and relationships that are built between the school and parents and understanding the individual academic and social needs of every child. I can say proudly that Garretson continues to make great strides in order to support all students in becoming success scholars and citizens.
I am very excited about the academic programs that Garretson has to offer our students. We are home to our Dual Language Immersion program, English Learner and GATE programs. In addition, we have a stellar Special Education department. Regardless of the educational strand enjoyed by your child, all of our students receive the benefit of a highly enriched language arts and mathematics curriculum. Our teachers work collaboratively in their Professional Learning Community in sharing lessons, activities designed to meet the needs of each and every child. The staff of Garretson looks upon every child within our school as "their child;" meaning that we are collectively responsible to ensure success for every student.
There are many studies that prove that students do better in school when they are surrounded by caring and compassionate people. We have implemented Character Counts, Second Step, 100Mile Club, a dynamic Student Council and we have implemented school-wide positive discipline system built on the promise of helping kids correctly navigate classroom and playground situations.
There are many ways parents can become active at school. We have a fantastic PTA which is always seeking volunteers. Parents are always welcome to volunteer in our classrooms. More information will be following during the first week of school explaining our parent volunteer orientation and check-in process.
From time to time, it is very common for questions to arise about your child's progress. Please feel free to leave a message in the office for your child's teacher and always know my door is open.
