        KINDERGARTEN READINESS CHECKLIST

    Kindergarten Sight Words

The California State Standards require high expectations at every grade level. Kindergarten is much more academic and in order for students to be successful, the skills listed below are necessary.  Please practice these skills as needed with your child so that he/she is prepared for the first day of school.  Thank you in advance for your help and support.

    ·         Holds pencil correctly

    ·         Writes first name using capital letter at beginning and lower case letters for the rest of the name

    ·         Uses scissors correctly

    ·         Uses a glue stick correctly

    ·         Recognizes the difference between letters and numbers

    ·         Knows the following colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, black, brown, and white

    ·         Identifies the following shapes: circle, square, rectangle, and triangle

    ·         Counts to 12

    ·         Recognize number 0 to 12 out of order

    ·         Recites the alphabet

    ·         Recognize the letters of the alphabet (lower and upper case) out of order

    ·         Identifies simple rhyming words (i.e. cat, mat; dog, log)

    ·         Follows a two-part direction

    ·         Takes turns with other children

An important literacy skill that is taught in kindergarten is "Concepts About Print" (CAP).  To help develop CAP, please discuss the following when reading books with your child:

    ·         Find the title of the book

    ·         Find the author's/illustrator's name

    ·         Find the beginning of the book

    ·         Find the title page

    ·         Discuss progression from left to right and top to bottom

    ·         Point to the words as they are reading

    ·         Point to the beginning and ending of words

    ·         Point to the spaces between words

Two of the most important things you can do with your child is to read to and talk to them often.  Studies show that the more language a child hears, the larger their vocabulary will be, and they will be better prepared for school and reading.  When reading, read several times per day for short periods of time.  Read your child's favorite book to them over and over again and invite your child to join in with you on parts that they know, rhyming words, etc.  Make reading a joyous part of your child's day.

Enjoy your time together.  We look forward to seeing your child in kindergarten!

    Suggested Kindergarten Supply List

Classroom donations are optional and always appreciated!  If you would like to help with supplies, please choose items under the category that starts with the letter of your last name. It is not necessary to label donated items with your child’s name as they will be used by all students.  Thank you for your generosity!
