I would like to express what a privilege it is to lead a district keenly dedicated to providing an enriching learning environment for student success. The faculty are educators who are life-long learners, caring and compassionate individuals committed to teaching and learning. Our support staff is comprised of individuals with knowledge and expertise readily willing and available to serve as needed. Our district administration recognizes the value of support, staff development and student services, and is committed to removing obstacles which prevent students and staff from maximizing their fullest potential. Each of these groups is fully supported by a five member School Board elected by our community. Guided by our mission and principles, we strive for the success of all students and staff in the Corona-Norco Unified School District.
Here at CNUSD, we welcome the 2014-15 school year with enthusiasm as we begin to implement the significant changes in K-12 education. The changes involve the way in which districts receive and allocate funding through the Governor’s new Local Control Accountability Plan, the implementation of the state mandated college and career readiness standards, and the launching of the district’s new 21st century online portal.
Our district recognizes that the success of each and every student depends on the partnership between students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Examples of this collective effort can be found in all district-wide endeavors. Namely, in the development of our College and Career readiness curriculum guides and trainings, which were developed and led by our teachers utilizing best practices and CNUSD principles. While the national standards are a set of mandated curriculum standards, CNUSD recognizes the importance and value in keeping the decisions of what and how we teach at the local level. Another example of commitment to community engagement was in the development of our Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). Together, with the community, CNUSD’s LCAP was created to identify annual goals, specific actions, and measure progress for student subgroups across multiple performance indicators; including student academic achievement, school climate, student access to a broad curriculum, and parent engagement. Through a collaborative effort, extensive parent and public input was obtained in developing this plan to ensure that the community is involved in decisions regarding the educational services we provide. These changes in public education provide valuable opportunities for our district to refine practices and explore innovative ways in which we can enhance the educational experience for our students. The desire to leverage our tradition of excellence and to propel our district to new heights has led to the development of the district’s new online portal, MyCNUSD, which is designed to bring community members together. CNUSD will launch an online central hub where anyone can go to communicate with peers, view relevant district documents, access web applications and resources conducive to teaching, learning, working, and staying informed.
Because community engagement is tremendously important to us, I welcome you to become involved in District activities and to provide feedback to District staff as we continue our journey of assisting each student in reaching their fullest potential. We believe in educating the whole child by providing an instructional program that is rigorous, experiential, meaningful, and aligned with state standards.
In addition, as we embark on this new school year, we are mindful of the critical importance of school safety, as it is paramount to fostering a healthy learning environment for student success. To learn about some of the specific safety measures that the District has in place, the community is encouraged to review the CNUSD Project Safety Net document here : http://www.cnusd.k12.ca.us/flipbook/safetynet/
To continue to stay connected with CNUSD employees, students, families and community members, we are excited to present our District news site featuring updates and articles about everything from student recognition to district events: http://news.cnusd.net. I also encourage you to follow us on Twitter @CNUSD and “like” us at Facebook.com/CNUSD.
It is my pleasure to serve as the Superintendent of a district where there is a tradition of excellence, continuous improvement, and high standards. Together, we have the power to make a positive impact on the lives of our students every day. It is incumbent upon us to use this influence to remove barriers, support students in their challenges, and give them access to the knowledge and information that will prepare them to be competitive in the global 21st century economy. I look forward to working with you in achieving what we collectively want for students, which is success beyond their years here at CNUSD. To assist us in this effort, we will continue to provide the highest quality education and school experience for our students. Your involvement and commitment to students is essential.
