Awards Criteria
 
(for end-of-the-year awards)
 
Dear Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Students and Parents,

Below are the many awards that will be presented at the last Awards Assemblies in May.  Listed under each award are the requirements toward earning the award.  I am hopeful that this will help students and parents to understand what is required to receive one or more of them.

Outstanding 6th Grader Awards
: This award is given to those sixth grade students who meet the demanding criteria.  These criteria are:
 
  • A- average for all report card grades issued during grades four through six.  This is equivalent to a 3.5 [GPA] on a 4-point scale.
  • Grades of "O" for Outstanding under "Behavior" on 7 report cards during grades four through six.  
     At no time during those years, may the grade be lower than an "S".
  • Homework grade for fourth though sixth consists of 7 report cards with a grade of "O" for Outstanding. At no time during those years, may the grade be lower than an "S".
  • Quality Spelling Program:  Student must have completed the requirements of the Quality Spelling program as determined by the grade level’s assessment.
  • Running Record Level:  Student must have a reading Running Record Level of at least 64 by May 1 for A-track or June 1 for tracks B, C, and D.
  • Writing Rubric Level:  Student must have a Writing Rubric Level of at least 3 by May 1.
  • Student has participated in at least one extra curricular school activity during the sixth grade year or a letter has been submitted with parent signature indicating outside activities that the child was involved in that prevented them from participating. 
  • The student, during their sixth grade year, must have submitted a PTA Reflections entry along with either a Science Fair project, or History Day project, or won school Spelling Bee.  Reflections entry and Science Fair or History Day project must meet criteria and, if graded by the teacher, receive at least a grade of B.
     

 


President's Award for Educational Excellence:
Given to all sixth grade students meeting the criteria.  These criteria are established by United States Department of Education and are:

     "A- average:  The overall A- average is composed of grades 4,  5, and the first and second trimesters of the 6th grade.  The A- average is equivalent to  a 3.5 [GPA] on a 4 point scale."  

                                                                        AND

     California State STAR Test:  Achieve at the "Advanced" proficiency level in math or reading on the statewide achievement test.

 


President's Award for Educational Improvement:
Given to a limited number of sixth grade students for exemplary effort and improvement in academics.  The student must have demonstrated exemplary improvement in one or more curricular areas or overall conduct.  A student must clearly demonstrate that such improvement has been done over the course of the sixth grade school year.  A teacher may be requested by administration to provide a statement and data defining the specific area along with any data for the area(s) of exemplary improvement.  The data and statement could be used by the committee
 

 


Ben Franklin’s Honor Roll Award (Grades 4, 5, and 6):
This award is given to those fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students who meet the demanding criteria for the three trimesters of their current grade level.  These criteria are:   

               FOURTH GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

•             A- average for all report card grades issued during the year (including third trimester).    This is equivalent to a 3.5 [GPA] on a 4-point scale.

 

•             Grades of "O" for Outstanding under "Behavior" on at least 2 report cards during the school     year.  At no time during the year, may the grade be lower than an "S".

 

             •            Homework grade consists of a minimum of 2 report cards with a grade of "O" for Outstanding                           during the school year. At no time during the year, may the grade be lower than an "S".

 

•            Quality Spelling Program:  Student must have completed the requirements of the Timeline for                            Learning.  Quality Spelling program as determined by the grade level’s assessment.

 

•            Running Record Level:  Student must have a Timeline for Learning reading Running Record                            Level of at least 44 by May 1. 1 for A-track or June 1 for tracks B, C, and D.

 

•            Writing Rubric Level:  Student must have a Timeline for Learning Writing Rubric Level of at                                 least 3 by May 1st.

 

•            Multiplication Timeline:  Student must have met the Multiplication Timeline for Learning as of
                         February 1.
 

               

                FIFTH GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

•             A- average for all report card grades issued during the year (including third trimester).    This is equivalent to a 3.5 [GPA] on a 4-point scale.

 

•             Grades of "O" for Outstanding under "Behavior" on at least 2 report cards during the school year. 
At no time during the year, may the grade be lower than an "S".

 

             •            Homework grade consists of a minimum of 2 report cards with a grade of "O" for Outstanding   

                           during the school year. At no time during the year, may the grade be lower than an "S".

 

•            Quality Spelling Program:  Student must have completed the requirements of the

             Timeline for Learning.  Quality Spelling program as determined by the grade level’s assessment.

 

•            Running Record Level:  Student must have a Timeline for Learning reading Running Record Level

             of at least 54 by May 1.

 

•            Writing Rubric Level:  Student must have a Timeline for Learning Writing Rubric Level of at least 3

             by May 1.

 

•            Multiplication Timeline:  Student must have met the Multiplication Timeline for Learning as of

             Nov. 1st.

*Students meeting the requirements for the Outstanding Sixth Grader Award will receive that prestigious award in place of the Honor Roll Award.
 

 


Respect, Honor and Effort Award: 
Two students per class receive this award.  It is given for two students per class showing exemplary characteristics of our Virtues program.  

 

 


Corona-Norco Management Association Outstanding Student Award:
  This is awarded is given by the administrators of the Corona-Norco Unified School District.  The Ben Franklin fifth grade teaching team based upon outstanding effort, citizenship, and academic achievement selects a fifth grade student.  This person has demonstrated the grade level Virtue and all of the Virtues of previous grades as well as the school-wide Virtue of respect.  Overall, this student exemplifies the characteristics of the perfect student.
