Water Conservation

In response to the on-going drought in California, the Corona-Norco Unified School District is leading by example and has taken the necessary steps to conserve as much as possible. The Corona-Norco Unified School District is committed to saving water at all its campuses and has taken progressively more intense action to reduce water consumption over the last several years.

Strategies that have served us well include:

  • Synthetic turf at five high school stadiums and one K-8 playfield saves water and increases available playtime
  • Over 600 waterless urinals District-wide with an estimated annual water savings of 24,000,000 gallons of potable water
  • Smart irrigation controllers at numerous schools to control watering schedules (City of Corona and WMWD grants)
  • Pool covers at each of our five high schools to reduce evaporation (Southern California Gas Co. grants)
  • Timely repairs of plumbing and irrigation leaks

Strategies currently in progress:

  • Turf removal and replacement with drought tolerant plants funded by $2.00 sq. ft. from City of Corona and WMWD grants
  • Addition of xeriscape landscaping to replace existing planters
  • Installation of reclaimed water for natural turf fields and landscaping funded 100% by City of Corona
  • Replacement of planter sprinkler heads with drip irrigation
  • Refining mowing and aeration schedules to prevent over drying of fields
  • Smart irrigation controllers at five additional sites utilizing $100,000 in City of Corona grants

Strategies in planning:

  • Continue with turf removal wherever feasible
  • Complete Smart irrigation controller installation District-wide
  • Replace antiquated irrigation system at CFIS
  • Additional reclaimed water conversions
  • Expand use of synthetic turf

Our grounds and irrigation staff, as well as supervisors, attend workshops on irrigation and landscape best practices and are passionate about saving water and improving the aesthetics of our District.  We appreciate the partnership with the City of Corona and the WMWD (Western Municipal Water District) and look forward to collaborating with the cities of Eastvale, Norco, and the JCSD water district as they develop their plans and grants.  Our goal is to meet or exceed the mandatory 25% water reduction requirements imposed by Governor Jerry Brown by executive order on April 1, 2015.
