Home Gardens Academy Receives Accolade for Parent University

Home Gardens Academy’s Dream Big Parent Academy, formerly named Parent University, received the Exemplary Practice In Parent Engagement award at the 23rd District PTA Conference held on June 11-12, 2015.

The goal of the Dream Big Parent Academy is to provide parents opportunities to become educational advocates and ensure that their children fulfill the Corona-Norco Unified School District’s goal  of all students being college and career ready.  In this program, participants are given resources to assist their children in excelling academically, socially, and emotionally.  Through this process, parents have been empowered to become partners with the school in leading the charge of increasing parental engagement.

Engaging with families has increased parent participation in leadership roles. To support parent as leaders, the school offers a variety of workshops that are selected based upon the annual needs assessment survey, as well as the goals written in the school plan.  In addition, parents earn graduation credits throughout the year based on participation in the academy and key school functions and are honored with a formal graduation celebration.

“The Dream Big Parent Academy has made a huge difference in closing the achievement gap and raising personal and academic aspirations of not only our students but also our parents,” said  Sabrina Kaspar, Assistant Principal.  “Education empowers parents to become positive role models for their children,  and leaders in the community, which results in improved student achievement and ultimately enriches quality of life.”
