Hello Colts,

I once heard a great story about Tanzanian marathon runner John Stephan Akhwari, who competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.  During his race, Akhwari fell and badly injured his knee.  Akhwari finished his excruciating race over an hour after the winner, with many in the stands having already left by the time he crossed the line.  When asked later why he kept running, John Stephan Akhwari simply replied, “My country did not send me 10,000 miles just to start the race; they sent me to finish the race.”  Colts, although we are nearing the end of the school year, I hope we can collectively encourage our students to finish their ‘race’ with as much energy, enthusiasm, and focus as they started it.  We look forward to completing the 2011-12 school year on a strong note with our students.

Here are some important school-wide news items I’d like to share with you:

  • Anti-Bullying Presentation: Today, our 7th grade students watched an educational theatre presentation performed by Kaiser Permanente on the topic of bullying.  The group portrayed bullying on campus, provided helpful tips, and explained the consequences of bullying.  This presentation supported our school-wide goal of creating a bully-free environment where our students respect themselves, and respect others.

  • End-of-Year Awards Ceremonies: Our Team Awards are scheduled for the following dates and times.  Team teachers will be letting students and parents know if they will be receiving an award:

  • 8th Grade Dance: All eligible 8th grade students are invited to attend our annual end-of-year dance on Tuesday, May 29 from 5pm-8pm.  The theme of this year’s dance is “A Perfect Ending,” and will feature dancing, dinner, and a photo booth!  School dress code applies (dress code violations will be called home for pick-up!).  Parents, please make sure you arrive to campus for pick-up by 8pm as it will be in the evening hours.  Looking forward to our dance!

  • 8th Grade Promotion: This year’s 8th grade Promotion will be held on Thursday, May 31, 9am at Eleanor Roosevelt High School’s Stadium.  Promoting students will need to arrive to the stadium by 8am for check-in.  Parking will be available on our lot, along with the ERHS lot adjacent to our school.  I encourage parents to arrive early to locate parking as Scholar Way will be impacted on the day of Promotion.  School dress code applies, with only flats or wedges allowable on the stadium field.  Promoting students are released to parents at the end of the ceremony.

  • Last Day for 7th graders: Thursday, May 31 will be a minimum day for 7th graders, with school starting at 8:45am and ending at 12:18pm.  Lunch will be served during the day.

  • First Day of School: An early heads up that our first day of school for the 2012-2013 school year will be on Wednesday, August 8.
