At Jefferson Elementary, we are proud to offer our GATE students a variety of enriching activities and experiences to enhance their elementary education.  For the 2018-2019 school year, we have begun a special Reader’s Theater program in which the GATE students take part in all aspects of implementation of a Readers Theater experience.  Our GATE students are given the option of participating in this program in which they work with other kids and a teacher leader, to read, and eventually perform different short stories.  In addition to participation in the Reader’s Theater program, our GATE students are given the opportunity to participate in our” iJaguar News” weekly broadcast.  The students are given the choice of becoming a “news anchor”, researching different colleges of the week, as well as doing behind the scenes work such as writing scripts and helping with the overall production.

Another aspect of our GATE program is the opportunity to work with Corona High School, the school which many of our students will eventually attend.  The students will participate in two special field trips to the Corona High School campus, during which they will participate in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) based activities.  These activities will include exposure to the acclaimed Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program at Corona High, as well as hands on experiments and simulations presented by high school students.  The kids will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the many pathways available for students who would like to enter a STEM focused field, as a career.

Finally, we are excited to unveil our new science lab on the Jefferson campus!  Our GATE students will be one of the first groups of kids to preview and work with new materials provided to Jefferson through a special grant.  We are excited to get this project underway!
