UNITY

IT'S HARD TO HATE SOMEONE WHEN YOU KNOW THEIR STORY

The UNITY program was developed in 2007 to reduce the expulsion and suspension rates, as well as the escalating racial tension on our high school campuses. For two years, the district used an outside source to address these issues but this organization went out of business. Simultaneously, we had a racially motivated student murder occur in our community. Consequently, there was a community outcry to change our school climate. The district immediately created a leadership class to promote and educate students on race relations, diversity, and building a positive school climate. Through various trainings and experiences, the CNUSD staff generated their own content for running our own camps. Over the years, as school and district climate has changed, the curriculum of UNITY Camp and class have evolved to suit our students’ needs. Having a vibrant, malleable, and relevant “living curriculum” approach is what has sustained the program.

PROGRAM LEADS QUOTE

“The UNITY Program has made a significant difference in the lives of many students. Specifically, UNITY has been able to break through students’ tough outer shells to reveal sensitive and caring hearts. Many of these students are leaders in their schools and their transformations permeate throughout the student body. The end result is not just lower disciplinary issues but also school cultures of acceptance and respectance.”
