Orange Grove High Students and CNUSD Painters Build Skills and Connections Through Annual Shed Project
Corona, CA - Each year at Orange Grove High School, students in the CTE Construction class take on a special project: building a shed for competition. But when the contest wraps up, the project takes on new life. That’s when the students join forces with CNUSD’s Support Services Painting Department for a day devoted not just to painting, but to learning, mentoring, and connection.
The event has quickly become a favorite tradition for everyone involved. With brushes and rollers in hand, the District’s painters spend the day working side by side with students, guiding them through the craft of painting buildings, walls, and more. Yet the lessons stretch far beyond technique.
“Throughout the day, our painters share tips with the kids about painting, but also about life,” said George Marron, CNUSD Support Services Manager. “We talk about how we started in our careers and how they, too, can succeed in construction trades—or in any path they choose.”
The day carries a sense of celebration. Students are treated to pizza, cold drinks, and snacks as they work, while listening to stories from professionals who understand what it takes to build a future. A welcome change of pace from their daily responsibilities, the day offers staff a chance to connect with students in ways their regular work doesn't always allow.
“Overall, it is a great day for both the kids and us,” Marron shared. “We get to share our stories, which gives us a sense of fulfillment and purpose. At the end of the day, we are all here for the kids.”
This year’s shed found its new home at Coronita Elementary, where it will serve the kindergarten class as a place to store their playground equipment. It’s a fitting destination for a project built with teamwork, care, and community spirit.
Now in its third year, the mentorship day has grown into a tradition that weaves together skill, encouragement, and possibility. For the students, it offers a glimpse of where their hard work could lead. For the painters, it’s a reminder of the meaning behind their craft. And for the community, it’s proof of what can happen when learning and mentorship go hand in hand.
