CTE Students Step Up During Medical Emergency
Students in the Corona High School CTE Health Careers Pathway recently put their classroom training into action during a real-life medical emergency on campus. When an adult suddenly became unconscious and unresponsive, Sports Medicine students quickly stepped in, demonstrating the composure, teamwork, and leadership they have developed through their program. Advanced Sports Medicine senior Elijah Kozloff recognized the seriousness of the situation and immediately helped initiate the emergency response, directing his peer, Jonathan Felix to notify their instructor, Mr. Jim Winn, and retrieve the campus Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
As the response unfolded, additional students including Unique Jones and Naraly Campos supported the effort by preparing medical supplies and helping organize the area so care could be delivered safely. Working together under Mr. Winn’s supervision, students assisted with monitoring the individual and gathering key health information, including vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. Their observations helped inform the decision to contact emergency medical services so the individual could receive further medical evaluation and care.
The students’ actions reflect the purpose of the CTE Health Careers Pathway giving students meaningful, hands-on experiences that build both technical knowledge and confidence. By remaining calm, working collaboratively, and supporting their instructor during a critical situation, these students demonstrated the professionalism and readiness that define the program and the future healthcare leaders it helps develop.
