A commitment to ensure all CNUSD students are readers by the third grade fuels the Reader by Nine Committee. Teachers and administrators, working together since 2014, have three goals:

  1. to develop district-wide practices to identify troubled readers in first and second grades;
  2. to analyze key data to prepare for needs-based interventions; and
  3. to instruct in interventions using assessments and resources currently on hand in primary grade classrooms.

In the winter of 2015, pilot efforts of teachers from eight CNUSD elementary schools logged impressive results using practices and protocols suggested from the committee, positively impacting students' reading abilities. In 2015-2016, all CNUSD first and second grade students will have this additional support following teacher training.
