History Made: Girls Flag Football Takes the Field
More than 200 CNUSD girls take the field in the inaugural CIF girls flag football season!
The Corona-Norco Unified School District has launched its inaugural season for Girls Flag Football as a CIF Sport! All five of CNUSD’s comprehensive high schools have established a team with over 200 student-athletes participating District-wide.
CNUSD is proud to be among the very few select schools in the Inland Empire who have chosen to offer Girls Flag Football as part of our comprehensive athletics programs.
All six teams in the BIGVIII (Centennial, Corona, Norco, Roosevelt, Santiago, and King) play at the same location each Monday night in back-to-back contests at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. (weather permitting).
“It’s kind of intimidating, honestly, especially when the guys’ football has already been in it for so long,” said Victoria Aguilar, Cornerback/Corner & Senior at Corona HS. “[Because we] want to show them what we can do.”
Corona High’s team will be led by coach Jimmy Bowers, who has previously led their girls' wrestling team to multiple championships. Norco’s team will be led by Wade Lockett, Santiago by Michael Boggio, and the two teams led by female coaches include Jennifer Constuble at Eleanor Roosevelt High School and Sami Logan at Centennial High School.
“It’s so important for these girls to put a female face to the sport," said Constuble on why she felt led to lead the team.
"They grew up with their brothers playing, they grew up with their dad’s playing, [they're] wearing their [dad's] numbers now. There’s not enough women out there to really show that hey, we can do this too. These girls are just as physical, just as smart. It’s so important for them to see that they’re capable of just as much as anybody else.”
