Centennial Student, Jared McCain, Named Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year

Corona - Centennial High School student, Jared McCain, is the 2021-22 Gatorade California Boys Basketball Player of the Year! He is the first Gatorade California Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Centennial High School.   

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Jared as California’s best high school boys basketball player. 

Jared led the Huskies to a 32-1 record, a No. 2 national ranking by MaxPreps and a berth in the Open Division state championship game at the time of his selection. He averaged 16.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists through 33 games. He was shooting 40.6 percent on 3-pointers and 89.4 percent from the foul line. A three-time All-League performer, he was named to the Damien Classic All-Tournament team and is ranked as the nation’s No. 22 prospect in the Class of 2023 by ESPN. 

Jared has volunteered locally on behalf of a school sports program for special needs students and has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
