CORONA - On Saturday, March 2, 2024, nearly 600 students from 28 schools spanning grades 5 – 8 converged on the campus of Corona High School to compete in Math Field Day. With support from over 60 coordinators, over 75 high school volunteers from Centennial, Roosevelt, and Santiago High School, math TSAs, and a small group of parents, the competition was the smoothest yet.
Math Field Day 24 is the latest in a storied CNUSD tradition that goes back nearly three decades. Since returning from the COVID pandemic, Coordinators have collaborated to develop a shared vision for the event- a math competition that encourages Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity.
The event has 3 distinct parts – a games competition where students compete against students from other schools in Hex, Capture, 5 in a Row, 3D Tic Tac Toe, and Mancala.
The second part is known as Construction Derby- an event where students received their task and supplies upon entering the gym and had 25 minutes to design, build, and test a marble roller coaster. Points were awarded for both design complexity and control over where the ball finished on a target.
The third event, Escape Room, is relatively new to Math Field Day, making its debut in 2021 when the competition was run virtually. This event has student teams competing to solve five problems in the fastest time possible.
