Rondo

EASTVALE - Rondo Elementary teachers worked together to create project based learning opportunities for students during remote learning. Students were tasked with making a rocket that could land upright when being dropped at least 3 feet. It was arranged for an engineer to join the classes on ZOOM to explain the engineering design process and encourage the kids to think things through with their design.

The students each made a rocket, and then used Flip Grid to tape their rocket drop. The engineer was given access to all the videos to watch the student’s rocket engineering efforts. He filmed another message to students congratulating those who’s rocket was successful and encouraging others to embrace a growth mindset, saying engineers fail all the time, but they ask why, and then go back and make adjustments to their design.

“The students were so excited to do this project and develop their own questions to ask the engineer,” said Mrs. Erickson, 3rd Grade Teacher, “Our goal was to have students learn about the Engineering Design Process through hands-on experience and realize how they can incorporate the 7 Habits from Leader in Me to be successful.”

This was a real world learning opportunity for our students who embraced their chance to be creative and learn different math and science concepts in an engaging way.
